Tab Addiction

Last week I realized something which may not be an incredible calamity, but is worth contemplating for the queue. The focus of this thought is the browser tab. It is fast becoming the standard for browsing the web with your favorite browsing software. While I admit, I think it is an awesome addition to web browsing, it could possibly offer some hindrances to navigation design.

I say this because I have caught myself performing the act. I am so addicted to using tabs that I not only have multiple sites open at one time, but multiple pages from the same site. The reasoning behind this is most likely because there is content in one area which I don’t want to leave. Somehow I feel that I will never be able to return to my previous location. So, as I am doing this, I wonder…

“Am I working against the navigation of the site? Do I not trust that the author can lead me back to a previous location? Or am I just too obsessed with opening tab after tab?”

Too Many Tabs

In conclusion, I have decided to try and limit my tab usage to a minimum. This decision will allow me to use site navigation for how it is intended instead of creating my own crazy navigation scheme with browser tabs. Trust designers, they are wise!
