There seems to be somewhat of a quotation mark trend going on. More specifically, oversized quotations are popping up on a lot of sites I have seen lately. Heck, I even started to use them.
The quotation mark trend is most likely fueled by a push for better typography on the web. The web page is a printed page, in a sense, and should follow the same display and punctuation guidelines as books, magazines and other forms of communication.
So now, designers and others are abstracting the use of the quotation mark into graphic elements which supplement their content. This not only creates a visually interesting space, but assists the user in determining what they are about to read. What a novel, and trendy, idea. Don't get me wrong, I like trends, the web would be boring without them.
